Nowhere will you find such city as Dubna! Dubna is a city of water. There are the Volga, Sestra, Dubna rivers, The Moscow canal and the Ivankovskoye reservoir. Dubna is a city of science. Founded in 1956 the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) with its 18 member countries is the only international center of fundamental science in Russia for today. Its scientific achievements not only made Dubna a world-famous city (often, the foreigners coming to Dubna right from the Sheremetjevo do not even know any other Russian cities) but also immortalized its name in the Periodic System - its 105th element "Dubny" was discovered in this city. Dubna is a city of aviation. Built in the thirties the Dubna Engineering Works and the "Raduga" Engineering Design Bureau have been producing a wide range of aircraft - from a hydroplane to the most modern Su-29. Dubna is a cosmic city. For over 20 years the Center of Space Communication has been specializing in the field of Russian systems of satellite communication (including the governmental channels of communication) as well as international ones - LMI, EUTELSAT, INTELSAT.
Dubna is an industrial city. Skillful staff of the JINR, the Scientific Industrial Complex "Aspect", the "Tenzor" instrument plant and a number of small companies, including joint-ventures, produce mostly small series of highly technological output in the field of instrument-making, electronics, spectrometry. Dubna is becoming a city of entrepreneurship. In 1999 the share of private enterprises in the city budget was over 50 %. Furniture, poly-graphic, auto-technical, electro-technical, glass-packet firms, the beer, coffee, confectionery production and soy-bean products gain wide popularity. The Trade-Industrial Chamber, whose aim is to establish links with other cities and countries, has been functioning for five years. Dubna is a city with the University. The International University for Nature, Society and Man was founded in 1994 and today 1300 students from numerous Russian cities and abroad are specializing here in "jurisprudence, "psychology", "alternative sources of energy", "strategic management", "ecology and the use of nature", "social work", "the state and municipal administration" etc. There are branches of the Moscow Institute of Radio Engineering, Electronics and Automatics (full-time tuition and tuition by correspondence), the State Academy of the Sphere of Services (tuition by correspondence), and preliminary courses of several Moscow higher educational establishments. Dubna is a city of sports. Water-skiers, skiers, cyclists, skateboarders, judoists, wrestlers, karate sportsmen, volley-ball players, bowmen, chess players, pugilists, weight-lifters, masters of light-athletics, calisthenics and table tennis take part in competitions and tournaments of high rank and bring home medals and cups. Dubna is a singing city. Nearly 10 choir studios (for children as well as for grown-ups, with wonderful soloists) perform not only in Russia, but also abroad (starting with Europe, the US and ending with South Africa), participate in international competitions as equals with professionals and become prize winners. In addition to the boys' choir and the choir lyceum, a new choir college has been accredited this year and conferred the status of a specialized musical-school. Dubna is a dancing city. Several ballet studios (traditional and folklore ones, for children, teenagers and adults), ball-dance groups have also won the world recognition. Moreover, Dubna has remarkable artists, amateurs and professionals, the municipal symphony orchestra, two photo studios and two TV studios, an association of poets and bards, four newspapers, one of which is for children, three youth drama studios, 14 public organizations. There is the computer center of legal information, the department of radiation therapy, the system of environmental monitoring, the dwelling construction on credit and so on and so forth. Isn't it too much for a city with a population of 67 000? Not at all! Dubna is nothing but the result of the incredible social experiment, in the course of which people of great intellect have been concentrating in the city over the decades. The experiment passed off successfully.
