Among the university's lecturers and
instructors are the scientists of the JINR (physicists, chemists,
radio-biologists), professors from the Moscow Sate University, the
Moscow Institute of Engineering and Physics, the Moscow Institute of
Aviation.
Since 1997 post-graduate studies have been available, since 1999 - tuition by correspondence. The University was among the first to work out the methods and programs of a distant form of education (by means of network computer technologies). There is a full-time preliminary department, several kinds of preliminary courses and the possibility of getting the second higher education. The University has established contacts with the universities of the USA, Germany, Britain, Brazil, Israel (incl. a student and post-graduate student exchange, probation periods).
For senior students practical work is a compulsory part of the curriculum, the graduating students get help in finding a job. The process of education is based on a new standard: a four-year training course leading to a Bachelor's Degree, five years - to get the Diploma of a specialist and a six-year course leading to a Master's Degree.
The peculiarity of the University is that instead of usual "faculties" there are departments of general education and 'graduating' departments, which allows to provide students with a thorough knowledge on numerous disciplines.
The University campus is compactly located in a suburb of the city and comprises several laboratories, a library, a dining-hall, gymnasiums and a student hostel. The lyceum for gifted children, which in some way provides the University with applicants is also situated in the campus.
The University has a choir, dance, drama studios, "the team of cheerful and sharp-witted", a newspaper. The competition is usually fierce - 3-11 applicants for one place (depending on the speciality). However, Dubna applicants and applicants from other towns have equal opportunities. In no way being a Dubna resident does improve your chances of becoming a student. Every year 1-2 new departments open to meet the need for the most urgent specialities.
Probably, in about 500 years the word "Dubna" will be the synonym of "Oxford".
